The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is proud to announce the launch of its new €400,000 National Grants program, a strategic initiative designed to empower emerging chess nations across the globe.
The fund will be distributed systematically to national chess federations based on their classification within the FIDE Development Index (FDI), spanning tiered levels 1 through 5. By targeting resources toward these specific tiers, FIDE aims to bridge structural gaps, accelerate grassroots talent development, and provide critical infrastructure support where it is needed most. Application timelines and yearly windows (running March 1st to October 31st).
The goal of FIDE Development Commission is to ensure that chess thrives in every corner of the world, regardless of a nation’s current economic or competitive starting point. This €400,000 funding injection provides emerging nations with the direct financial backing required to run national championships, train local arbiters and coaches, and send promising players to international competitions.
The tiered distribution framework ensures strict accountability and tailored financial assistance, allowing federations at different stages of growth to apply for grants that match their specific developmental milestones.
National federations spanning FDI Tiers 1 to 5 are invited to submit their comprehensive development proposals starting this week. Detailed application guidelines, reporting requirements, and allocation breakdowns per tier will be sent directly to qualifying member federations and made available on the official FIDE portal.
The Tier Classification
Level 1 (Most Developed): Elite chess nations with high player bases, self-sufficient infrastructure, and dominant international performance (e.g., USA, India, China).
Levels 2 & 3 (Developing): Mid-tier federations with expanding grassroots systems, localized event hosting, and growing competition representation.
Levels 4 & 5 (Least Developed): Emerging chess nations, with Level 5 being the default for newly registered federations needing the heaviest infrastructure aid.
